Some important questions about New Zealand:
What is the weather like?
Generally New Zealand’s weather is warmer and sunnier than what you experience in the UK. Christchurch and Napier in the east of the country have the drier climates and the warmer weather is found in the north of the North Island. The city of sails, Auckland’s climate is variable due to it being located close to both the east and west coast of New Zealand which brings sea breezes that make for great sailing on the Waitemata harbour and people are always seen on the many beaches throughout the Auckland region no matter what the season. Wellington at the bottom of the North Island is also located on a harbour that experiences winds from the Cook straight and some outstanding winter sunshine.
What is the population of New Zealand?
Our population is a little over 4.1 million people. 2001 Census figures indicate that New Zealanders' ethnicity is:
- European: 80%
- Maori: 14%
- Asian: 7%
- Pacific Islander: 6%
Some people belong to more than one ethnic group so the numbers add up to more than 100%. Another census has just been completed in 2006 and the results will be publicised in due course.
